RUBRICS FOR BOTH CATEGORIES

Composition

• Sub-criteria: Structure and Cohesiveness
• Description: This criterion focuses on how well the performers organize and structure their routine. It evaluates the flow and arrangement of different sections of the performance, ensuring that it forms a cohesive piece with a clear direction. This includes how well the sounds, rhythms, and melodies are composed to create an engaging and well-paced performance.

Key Elements:
• The judges are looking for a well-structured composition with clear transitions between sections. The arrangement should have a logical flow, building momentum throughout.
• The ability to maintain coherence from start to finish, avoiding randomness or disjointed transitions between different beat patterns, is critical. The overall narrative or thematic progression of the routine matters.

Guidelines:
• Performances that have a clear structure, with distinct parts (e.g., intro, buildup, climax, outro), will score higher.
• Smooth transitions between sections, without abrupt or jarring shifts, improve the composition score.
• A performance with an engaging and well-thought-out arrangement of beats and melodies will be rewarded.

Complexity

• Sub-criteria: Technical Intricacy and Innovation
• Description: Complexity assesses the difficulty and innovation of the sounds, techniques, and rhythms used in the performance. It focuses on how intricate and multi-layered the beatboxing is, as well as how advanced the techniques are. Performers who push the boundaries of what is technically possible with more challenging and sophisticated sounds are rewarded here.

Key Elements:
• Judges will look for advanced techniques such as complex rhythm patterns, fast-paced beat changes, and layered sounds.
• The use of a variety of challenging sounds (like inward bass, snares, vocal scratches) and the ability to seamlessly integrate them into the performance will be considered.
• Innovation, or the introduction of unique sounds and techniques that stand out, will also contribute to the complexity score.

Guidelines:
• Higher points are awarded for performers who use intricate, well-executed techniques and blend multiple layers of sound together harmoniously.
• A routine that showcases a variety of advanced techniques, all performed cleanly, will score better.
• Risk-taking in terms of introducing complex rhythms and sound combinations, as long as they are executed well, will lead to higher scores.

Originality
• Sub-criteria: Combination of technicality, musicality, and showmanship
• Description: Measures how well the performer executes these elements in a unique way.
• Guidelines: The more creatively these criteria are combined, the higher the score.
