a harmonious confluence: Two worlds collide at ACAMEEt

Acameet is an innovative event series hosted by Vocal Village Singapore, spearheaded by the renowned singer Amanda Ong from New Recording 47. Amanda’s vision to expand the acapella community and provide growing acapella groups with a platform to showcase their talents to a wider audience has truly come to life through Acameet. This event has become a cornerstone for the acapella community, offering a stage for emerging artists to shine.

Interestingly, the acapella community in Singapore shares a significant overlap with the beatbox community, creating a unique synergy between these two musical forms. Many members of the beatbox community also participate in acapella groups, fostering a supportive and collaborative environment. This intersection of talents and interests has led to a natural convergence of the two communities, enriching the local music scene.

Around the same time Acameet was gaining traction, the global beatbox community was evolving towards a more crew-oriented mindset. Beatbox crews, utilizing elements of beatboxing and acapella, began to set the new standard, or “meta,” in the beatboxing world. These crews create intricate and dynamic performances that blend the rhythmic and percussive elements of beatboxing with the harmonic and melodic aspects of acapella.

With these aligned objectives, 555Beatbox Academy has encouraged its students to participate in Acameet’s open mic category. This provides a perfect opportunity for our beatbox crews to showcase their innovative sets, which seamlessly integrate both beatboxing and acapella elements. By participating in Acameet, our students not only get to display their skills but also contribute to the broader goal of uniting and advancing these complementary art forms.

The collaboration between the beatbox and acapella communities at events like Acameet highlights the versatility and creativity of our artists. It’s a testament to the power of music to bring people together, break boundaries, and create something truly unique and beautiful. We look forward to seeing more of our students take the stage, pushing the limits of what can be achieved through the fusion of beatboxing and acapella.

The second Acameet, hosted by Vocal Village Singapore, was a groundbreaking event for the 555Beatbox Academy. It marked the first time our students attended this event, previously attended only by instructors. This Acameet was historic as it featured beatboxers in an acapella show for the first time.

We sent our renowned tag team, Rydric, consisting of our young prodigy Clarkceds and Inovity, an instructor at 555Beatbox Academy Youth Classes and the Singapore Beatbox Champion. Their performance wowed the audience, many of whom were seeing a live beatbox performance for the first time. The energy and skill displayed by Rydric, with their heavy EDM drill beats, showcased the extent of professional beatboxing, leaving the crowd in awe.

Since this was an open mic event, some of our students also participated, adding to the excitement. ALC, our musical beatbox prodigy, and Jonhatten, now an instructor known for incorporating musical styles into his beats, took the stage. Additionally, Gsen from Penang, the Penang Beatbox Champion who recently joined the 555Beatbox community, showcased his musical beatboxing style. The crowd was not only treated to Rydric’s high-energy performance but also got to witness three unique musical beatbox styles, blending elements of acapella and beatboxing.

There were also other very talented acapella groups involved in this event that got us thinking, “Can we beatboxers do this?” The instructors went back with this question, determined to find the answer for the next Acameet.

This event was a significant milestone, demonstrating the versatility and creativity of beatboxing within the acapella community and highlighting the incredible talent nurtured at 555Beatbox Academy.

Acameet 3

In the third Acameet hosted by Vocal Village Singapore, held at the prestigious Capitol Theatre, 555Beatbox Academy showcased the incredible talents of its students through two distinctive creeds. This event marked a significant moment as it brought together the realms of beatboxing and acapella, allowing audiences to witness the creative potential of these art forms when combined.

The first creed, Avantgarde, featured a dynamic group of students: Jonhatten (who has since become an instructor), Dre, Capit4l, Tengwai, and Scordhing Flame. Their set included beatbox renditions of “Mount Everest” by Labyrinth and “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift. Their performance captivated the audience, many of whom were witnessing a beatbox crew for the first time. The complex sound design and innovative approach left a lasting impression, demonstrating the versatility and creativity inherent in beatboxing.

The second creed, Bohemians, presented a high-energy set with members Impreza and Chibear. Their routine, “Raise the Tempo,” was a drum and bass beatbox performance that electrified the audience. This performance highlighted the rhythmic precision and dynamic range of beatboxing, showcasing it as a powerful form of musical expression within the acapella community.

Additionally, our students had the unique opportunity to collaborate with singers in a special segment. This experience allowed them to step into the role of vocal percussionists in an acapella group, broadening their musical horizons and fostering a deeper understanding of collaborative performance. It was an enriching exchange.

On the big Stage

at acameet 5

Vocal Village had the incredible opportunity to host Acameet 5 within the Singapore Voices Festival 2023 at the prestigious Singapore Esplanade. This time, with top-notch equipment and a prime location, the performances at Acameet were of exceptional quality, featuring professional mixing and high-end sound systems.

Our students had the chance to experience performing on an amazing sound stage equipped with subwoofers and professional speakers. Our academy prepared several impressive items for this significant event.

The first act by 555 was none other than our esteemed members of Avantgarde, once again showcasing the fusion of Beatboxing and acapella in a crew setting. Members included Scorching Flame, Tristmus, ALC, Jonhatten, and Tengwai.

Another act by Avantgarde featured only Jonhatten and ALC with a new arrangement named “Crow Fisher,” which utilized melodic acapella techniques such as harmonizing and layering—new for beatboxers at the time. This blend of familiar beatbox sound design and acapella elements blew the minds of both the beatbox and acapella scenes, opening up more opportunities for 555Beatbox in 2024.

Lastly, there was a professional Beatbox showcase by our Youth Beatbox Class Instructor and Singapore Beatbox Champion, Inovity. He performed a cover of “Lalala” by Y2K, arranged by Vino Beatbox of Canada. This pure beatbox routine demonstrated the limits of the human voice to the acapella community.

This event was a fantastic intersection and a significant learning opportunity for many of our students at 555Beatbox Academy. Performing and experiencing our art form in such high quality, thanks to the Esplanade and Vocal Village teams, was an unforgettable experience.
